BinaryLane can provide your VPS with an emulated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 1.2. This article explains how to enable it in mPanel and what you need to know before using it for BitLocker or other TPM-backed keys.

Warning: The TPM state is stored separately from your VPS disk and is not included in backups or copied to a cloned VPS. Before enabling BitLocker, save the BitLocker recovery key somewhere outside the VPS. You may need it after restoring a backup to a new VPS, cloning, rebuilding or reinstalling the VPS, or disabling TPM.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Before you start

  • Applying an advanced setting requires a VPS reboot, which causes a short outage.
  • BinaryLane currently provides TPM version 1.2. Later TPM versions are not currently available.
  • Enabling TPM v1.2 does not change the price of your VPS.

Enable TPM v1.2

  1. Log in to your BinaryLane account.
  2. Navigate to your VPS within mPanel.
  3. Open Advanced settings. You can also use the Advanced settings quick-access link (select your server from the list after clicking this link).
  4. Check the box next to Enable TPM v1.2.
  5. Scroll down and click Save Settings. Your VPS will then reboot to apply the change.

What happens to the TPM state?

The TPM state is the contents of the emulated chip, including keys such as BitLocker or attestation keys. It is stored separately from your VPS disk.

  • Backups: The TPM state is not included. A new VPS built from a backup starts with the default advanced settings, so you must enable TPM v1.2 again.
  • Cloning: The TPM v1.2 setting is copied, but the TPM state is not. The cloned VPS receives an empty TPM.
  • Rebuilding, reinstalling or disabling TPM: The VPS receives an empty TPM.
  • Live migration: The TPM state moves with the VPS. No action is required.

If BitLocker uses a key held in the TPM, Windows may ask for the BitLocker recovery key after an operation that gives the VPS an empty TPM.
