Your server is located in the region of your choice at the time of provisioning: Where are BinaryLane servers located?

Some GeoIP (geolocation) lookups may indicate that your server is not located in the region you chose (i.e. you purchased a Brisbane server, but the GeoIP lookup reflects the server's location as Sydney). This is expected and does not change where your server is: see Why do GeoIP databases show my server in Sydney? below.

You can confirm your server's location by performing a `traceroute` from your server towards the region's Lookingglass, comparing the route latency between regions:

Why do GeoIP databases show my server in Sydney?

Our Australian IP ranges are deliberately registered with MaxMind and the other geolocation databases as Sydney. Our network is anycast and any server can be moved between our Australian regions, and those databases work per address range rather than per address, so a single consistent location is the only one that is never wrong. Some older ranges still read another state from before servers could move between our data centres; those will be brought into line with the rest over time.

None of this affects routing, latency or where your server actually is, which you can confirm with a traceroute from our looking glasses as shown above. We do not change database entries per server, and we do not assign addresses by geolocation. BinaryLane will not contact geolocation services to update their databases. These services may update their records according to their own thresholds, such as usage over time and nearest neighbours.

If a specific third-party service is misbehaving because of its geolocation lookup, that service's own location override or correction form is the place to fix it.

Can my server be kept on one host node?

No. Our infrastructure uses active load balancing, which moves servers between the underlying host nodes, and a server cannot be pinned or restricted to a specific host node. If you need two servers kept on different host nodes for redundancy, set them as partners: see Partner Server.

Example

This server has an IP address within the subnet 43.224.x.x and is located within Brisbane:

If we look on MaxMind (or similar geolocation services) to see what the GeoIP location of the server is, MaxMind shows a `Location` other than Brisbane:

We can confirm the actual location of the server is correct by performing a `traceroute` from the Brisbane BinaryLane Lookingglass towards the server:

The response time from the Brisbane Lookingglass is < ~5ms, compare this with the Sydney:

We can see that the route from our Sydney Lookingglass took 2 extra hops to reach the server with an average latency of 11.9ms. This indicates that the server is physically located in Brisbane, as the response time from the Brisbane Lookingglass is significantly lower than the response time from the Sydney Lookingglass.
